Become a Member

Dear Prospective Member:

Thank you for your interest in the Michigan Society of Anesthesiologists (MSA) and the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA). As you may know, ASA requires concurrent membership in the appropriate State Component Society (ASA Bylaws Section 1.34.) Following are guidelines to help you understand each membership category and assist in the efficient processing of your membership application.

Active Membership

Doctors of Medicine or Osteopathy licensed to practice medicine within the jurisdiction of MSA may apply for Active Membership. Members' principal professional activity must be in Michigan, and they must be licensed to practice medicine in Michigan. Members must re-apply to ASA when moving to a new State Component Society.

Affiliate Membership

This category includes:
  • Physicians not engaged in the clinical practice of anesthesiology.
  • Scientists not engaged in administering clinical anesthesia to humans who have an interest in anesthesiology.
  • Physicians who are in the service of the United States Government, including the Veterans Administration.
  • A physician who resides outside the United States and is not a member of any other Component Society.

Retired Membership

A retired member is a Doctor of Medicine or Osteopathy, or a Bachelor of Medicine, who has been an Active Member of this Society for ten or more years, and who has completely retired from professional activity. Members must re-apply to change status.

Resident Membership

A resident member must be a physician in full-time training in an anesthesiology residency program that is compliant with the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or the American Osteopathic Association.

Please feel free to call the MSA office Monday through Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 5:15 p.m. for further information. We look forward to your participation in the MSA!
